The Dunes is the 7th most visited national park in the USA! This is the birth place of the science of ecology more than a century ago!
Educational. Even though I've lived in the area all my life I learned things I didn't know about the history of the area.

Feeling sorry for all the fine park service personnel who are affected by the shutdown. You guys don't deserve this. I value my national parks and really appreciate all the rangers and other park service workers that keep them nice. We owe them more than this.
A really beautiful park with a great view. The national park is free! It’s a 1 and a half drive from Chicago, and so nice and isolated. Great escape from the city.
Bleak and cold two days before Thanksgiving, but the visitor's center was open and the staff friendly and helpful. There's a great section with displays and interactive activities especially made for younger kids. Lake Michigan was impressive, with the skyline of Chicago faintly visible in the far distance from the pavilion, despite the poor weather.
Very educational and fun spot to visit. Used to pass by it all the time, but had never went inside. I decided to put a stop to that, though, and took my wife with me. We didn't know there was so much to see inside. They had lots of souvenirs, lots of brochures, and they even had a decent-sized theater with a subtitled film playing inside. The film talked about the history of the Indiana Dunes. The visitor Center even had a small museum-like area also. Very good place to stop by before going on a trail or camping. It will help make your experience at the Dunes even more memorable.
